About Us

Welcome!  Village Independent Democrats is a progressive, activist community organization of local Democrats committed to party reform, social justice, equality under the law, and the welfare of all.  VID works to reform city, state, and national politics and to ensure progressive political leadership, fair judges, and forward-thinking policies.

VID is open to anyone, wherever you live, and you are invited to participate as you choose.  Although members might belong to multiple clubs, VID requires members to vote only in one. We operate on the ground, knocking on doors for endorsed candidates, holding debates and forums for politicians regarding reforms, and engaging with our elected leaders who speak at our meetings.

Born in 1956, VID has a long and colorful history as one of the longest-standing reform Democratic clubs in New York City.

Primary Election Results & Volunteer Thanks

VID members worked tirelessly on behalf of our endorsed candidates during an exceptionally competitive primary season, and we can't thank our dedicated volunteers enough!

While the results were mixed, we celebrate decisive victories by Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, Assemblymember Grace Lee, Council Member Carl Wilson, and Micah Lasher in NY-12. We are also eagerly awaiting the final certified results in the 66th Assembly District, where our endorsed candidate, David Siffert, trails by just 56 votes, and a recount is underway.*

In the 10th Congressional District, Congressman Dan Goldman was defeated by former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander in the Democratic primary. We thank Congressman Goldman for his outstanding service to Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, particularly his leadership defending our democracy, standing up to corruption, protecting immigrant communities, and fighting for affordability. As a former federal prosecutor, Rep. Goldman led the first impeachment investigation of Donald Trump and, in Congress, championed legislation to close tax loopholes for the ultra-wealthy, strengthen consumer protections, expand educational opportunities, and secure millions of dollars in federal funding for local nonprofits, NYCHA developments, and community institutions throughout our district. Rep Goldman's concession speech here.

We also congratulate Brad Lander on his victory. He has a strong record of public service and has long championed many of the progressive values that VID shares. We look forward to working with him in the months and years ahead.

Several other VID-endorsed candidates did not appear on the primary ballot because they were unopposed. Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Tish James, and State Senator Erik Bottcher automatically advance to the November General Election as the Democratic nominees. In addition, Sommer Omar and Ben Yee were unopposed for State Committee and were automatically elected.

As we turn our attention to the November General Election, the primary season is behind us. VID looks forward to supporting the Democratic nominees chosen by voters and working together to elect leaders who will defend our democracy, protect fundamental rights, and advance progressive values.

The latest election results can be found here.

Thank You, Volunteers and Canidates!

Democracy doesn't happen by itself. It depends on people who are willing to give up their weekends, stand on street corners, talk to voters, hand out literature, and do the often-unseen work that makes elections possible. We are enormously grateful to the following volunteers, candidates, and supporters who joined VID this weekend at Abingdon Square, City As School, and IS 70. Thank you for your commitment, your energy, and your belief that participation matters.
