November 21, 2019 – At a forum on reducing gun violence, coordinated by Gun Reform Committee co-chairs Deb Sherman and Allison Stowell and presented on Nov. 21st by Village Independent Democrats (VID) and several other Manhattan Democratic clubs, the focus was on what community groups in violent neighborhoods are doing to reduce demand for guns. October 19, 2019 Post Card signings: Seventeen VID’ers staffed two sites. We got 283 signatures on the gun reform postcards going to Governor Cuomo.
April 10, 2019: VID’s Gun Reform Committee discusses the importance of federal gun legislation with representatives of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and the House Judiciary Committee.
February 25, 2019: VID’s Gun Reform Committee joins families, gun prevention advocates and legislators for the signing of New York’s Red Flag Law.
February 6, 2019: VID’s Gun Reform Committee supports House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler as he chairs Congress’s first gun violence prevention hearing in nearly a decade.
January 29, 2019: New York passes its Red Flag Law, closes the Charleston Loophole, bans bumpstocks and passes other significant gun violence prevention measures in its first comprehensive gun reform legislation since passage of the SAFE Act in 2013.
October 25, 2018: VID joins with New Yorkers Against Gun Violence to write postcards to new voters in Congressional District 19 reminding them to vote in the midterm elections.
October 11, 2018: VID writes Governor Cuomo congratulating him on his primary victory and calling on him to remember his campaign promises on gun violence prevention.
August 13, 2018: VID writes postcards in support of Alessandra Biaggi, a No-IDC candidate with a strong gun violence prevention platform.
June 18, 2018: New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, Senator Brad Hoylman and Senator Brian Kavanagh join VID in tweeting support of the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act.
June 12, 2018: VID collects postcards from 1,300 New Yorkers demanding that Governor Cuomo pass the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act.
June 11, 2018: VID prepares a postcard campaign demanding Governor Cuomo pass the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act.
June 1, 2018: VID members wear orange ribbons for #WearOrange weekend and donates all proceeds from the sale of ribbons to Everytown for Gun Safety.
April 26, 2018: VID honors Ken Kidd and Hal Moskowits of Gays Against Guns.
April 7, 2018: VID adopts two gun reform resolutions demanding Congressional action to end gun violence and that the minimum age to own firearms and ammunition be raised to 21. Resolution 1, Resolution 2
March 24, 2018: VID marches with Representative Jerry Nadler in New York’s March for Our Lives and travels to Washington, DC for the national march.
February 26, 2018: VID founds a gun reform committee.
